When should I start thinking about a will?

There is no specific age or circumstance that makes a will suddenly necessary — but having one in place means your wishes are recorded and your family is spared considerable uncertainty later. Many people start the process when they acquire property, start a family, or simply feel the time is right. Our consultation is a relaxed, unpressured way to explore what a will for your situation might look like.

What is the difference between a grant of probate and letters of administration?

A grant of probate is issued when the deceased left a valid will — it confirms the executor's authority to administer the estate. Letters of administration are used when there is no will (intestate), and they appoint an administrator to handle the estate according to Malaysian law. Both documents allow the estate's assets to be collected, managed, and distributed. We handle both.

How long does the probate or administration process typically take?

Timelines vary depending on the complexity of the estate, how promptly documents can be gathered, and the court's own schedule. Straightforward matters may be resolved within several months; larger or contested estates can take longer. We will give you a realistic sense of the timeline at our first meeting, and we keep you informed throughout.

Does the service cover Islamic inheritance (faraid) matters?

Yes. We advise on faraid — the Islamic rules governing how a deceased Muslim's estate is distributed. This includes understanding which assets are subject to faraid, how beneficiary shares are calculated, and how to navigate the Shariah court process where relevant. For mixed estates involving both conventional and Islamic portions, we help the family understand how both sets of rules apply.

What information do I need to bring to the first meeting?

Bring whatever you have at hand. Useful documents include the will (if one exists), the deceased's identification documents, a list of known assets such as property, bank accounts, and shares, and any existing correspondence with banks or government bodies. If you are planning your own will, bringing a rough list of your assets and your intended beneficiaries is a helpful starting point. We will guide you on anything else we need.

Are the fees fixed or are there additional costs?

The fees listed for each service are our professional fees for the work described. There may be separate disbursements — such as court filing fees, stamp duty, or registration charges — which are charged at cost and not marked up. We will go through any expected disbursements with you at the outset so there are no unexpected figures later.
